Conservative Marxism:
Marxism is ordinarily regarded as resting on the left end of
the political spectrum. Yet there is an element of conservatism, though perhaps
not Rightism, underlying pure Marxism, that is: the sort of vision that endures
two centuries of trial and error.
The conservative American psyche of the Right deplores Marx
for threatening the Way of Life. Unconsciously, the fear is that under a
Marxist dictatorship the individual would never be allowed to grow to his full
potential; a man could never BECOME a man, for all would be provided for him,
and a woman cannot BECOME a woman because she may rule over men arbitrarily.
Yet this is an insecure conservatism. Fundamentally, a true
conservative is not obsessed with PRESERVING the Way of Nature. He knows that
he cannot HELP but to preserve it; it endures all. We cannot violate Nature; we
can only estrange ourselves from it. To quote Carlin: “The planet is FINE. It’s
the PEOPLE that are fucked.”
So a Marxist would say: we do not REQUIRE money as a social
institution in order to become-Men. ANY social institution that we must RELY
upon to such a degree is a manifestation of infantile dependency.
So Marxism is both liberal AND conservative: liberating us
from old traditions whilst CONSERVING our connections with Nature.
